In spite of glowing blurbs from industry luminaries, Goodbye, Chunky Rice I found to be an uninteresting and ultimately vapid piece of writing supposedly about friendship and loss and grieving those who are still alive, but – for me – the characters felt about as rounded as a square (the least round shape), as complex as a triangle (the least complex shape) and as deep as the slick of oil I will use to shallow fry the onions for my pasta sauce base later on today…
I thought it was a redundant text, lacking emotional heft, absent of any meaningful characterisation and boring to look at in its – tho maybe this is just the effect of time – very late 90s/early 00s aesthetic that feels dull, dated, and of very little visual interest.
I don’t think I liked the Craig Thompson book I read many years ago, and I definitely didn’t like this. Will try better to remember it this time, as I definitely can’t be arsed to be this bored by a book again any time soon…
Not for me!!!
