Film Musings

march movie round up

adventures in cinema in March 2025

One of my 2025 resolutions is to watch more movies! See what happened in February here!

I had access again to Mubi this month, but I also went to a couple of baby-friendly screenings at the Barbican. And also the new seasons of both The White Lotus and Righteous Gemstones are in progress, so big chunks of my screen time (I rarely watch more than an hour of “entertainment” every couple of days because I have “better” things to do (crying/reading/blogging/doing amateur comedy/childcare).)

(That first episode of new Righteous Gemstones with Bradley Cooper is phenomenal stuff. If I was putting TV episodes into Letterboxd that would be five stars and a big heart! (So too would be Episode 6 of The White Lotus (the hungover one). (I haven’t seen episode 7 yet as I went to the zoo instead. (I wasn’t paying for the zoo tickets, don’t worry!))

Focus!

Below is my March letterboxd diary round up…

I watched the Three Colours trilogy this month, all of which are beautifully shot and lit visual powerhouses, one of which is a gorgeous meditation on grief (Blue), one of which is a cheeky and playful brilliant exploration of love and ageing and regret and all sorts of other ideas (Red) and one of which is atrocious, pointless crap (White).

I watched and loved Passages and was shockingly disappointed by Mickey 17 (which feels like a showreel from a first time director who aspires to making a Marvel movie – imo it’s astounding this was released as is, it contains genuinely some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen in mainstream cinema to the point where I frequently felt embarrassed watching it).

I saw a few other pieces, but the real highlight for me was On Falling, a brutally benign social realist piece about failing to have any meaning in life while living in poverty. I’d recommend it heartily. That was one of the films I saw in a baby friendly screening, and I was probably the person crying the most in the room. I loved it.

I’m not certain what I’ll be watching in April yet, but hopefully I’ll try and get some more red hearts there than there was for March…
