One of my 2025 resolutions is to watch more movies! See what happened in March here!
Yes, I had an active (discounted) Mubi subscription this month, but I didn’t make it to a screening once. I did a little more paid work than recent months, gigged (as comedian) slightly more than is practical and I also rewatched Nathan For You on my phone. I also still have a baby and a partner and had to watch the finale of The White Lotus and keep on enjoying the divine Righteous Gemstones.
It’s been a mediocre month for movies, and a bad month for books.
Below is my April letterboxd diary round up…
I saw the brilliant melancholic thriller Decision To Leave at the start of the month, then a couple of underwhelming things in Mubi’s post-apocalyptic season. I watched a handful of really good shorts at the end of the month, watched the far from perfect (though occasionally electric) Scorsese film The Departed, but the real highlight of my viewing pleasure this month was the feature length finale (the feature?) of Nathan For You, released as Nathan For You: Finding Frances.
If you haven’t seen that show through to its end, I cannot recommend highly enough that final 90 minute episode. Finding Frances is a genuinely powerful piece of flawless cinema about regret, ageing, self-deception and false ideas of sacrifice. What is artifice and what isn’t? What is creativity? What is truth? What is a lie and what do lies mean when the people who tell them believe them?
It’s about mythologies both personal and cultural, it’s about the pursuit of satisfaction and it’s about deceit. Or maybe it isn’t.
Very excited for Season 2 of The Rehearsal (not yet out in the UK, though a couple of episodes deep in the US).

My discounted Mubi subscription runs out in May, so I may track back towards the mainstream and the full length feature, unless I can pull together enough work to justify the full price option (currently looking unlikely).
Please argue with my opinions in the comments if you want.
Thanks again!
