One of my 2025 resolutions is to watch more movies! See what happened in April here!
–///–
OK, so my Mubi membership has run out, I’ve been working more and I’ve been gigging more and, therefore, I’ve been watching less films.
All but one of these were trips to the cinema with a baby on my lap, and as my infant is nearing toddlerdom, soon Baby Whamathan (not its real name) and I will be prohibited from watching racy big screen sleaze together for about a decade and a half. Sad times: that baby adored Parthenope.
I watched a couple of new blockbusters, one of which was excellent and did exactly as promised, while the other was, yes, fun but was visibly tired (understandable as it was the eighth instalment in its near 30-year series run). In celebration of the election of an American Pope, I went to see the latest Paolo Sorrentino sleazefest, while at home I watched a solid ’90s action film in bursts of heady cardio.
I’ve been busy, and in front of fewer screens. (Though I did watch all of Nathan Fielder’s fucking spectacular new season of The Rehearsal, which I cannot recommend highly enough, unless you genuinely have no interest in people and/or visual media.)
Below is my small May letterboxd diary. I did enjoy everything, yes. But none of it changed my life. And that is, alas, something I hope to happen every time I engage with any form of expressive art.

To see my brief reviews of these films (and everything else I’ve read this year), head to my profile.
Or, instead, disagree with me in the comments below…
