FRANK ABRAMS is a brilliant and fascinating man – among many others things, he’s a criminal defence attorney, an author, a musician and even an inventor. Although we don’t touch on those last two elements of his life in this conversation, what is included here is a sweeping discussion of the themes and topics explored in great detail in his recent novel, THE COCKFIGHT.

The novel explores injustice in all of its forms, and though it is a fictional tale about a former teacher who is convicted and imprisoned on the basis of false testimony and fudged DNA evidence, FRANK ABRAMS populates his work with narratives and lives similar to those he has encountered during his career to date. The novel is part analogy, part slice of life fiction, and it includes excitement, adventure, romance – and cockfighting – alongside the hefty discussion of the ways in which institutional processes limit the lives and life choices of individuals.

In our wide-reaching conversation, FRANK ABRAMS discusses his life and work, his inspirations and his processes, as well as the ways in which he has seen injustices and inequalities increase over the past few decades, and his theories as to why and how this has happened.

This is essential viewing (or listening – put it on in the background, if you like!) to anyone with an even passing interest in justice, fairness, equity and the claims the Western world makes for freedom, tolerance, opportunity and fairness.

Bio:

FRANK ABRAMS is a criminal defense attorney in both North Carolina and Florida. He has practiced federal and state criminal law during his entire 38-year career. He has appeared on public radio and Court TV. He is also an inventor, having a patent on a new type of banjo, and has been in the news for finding a tintype picture of Billy The Kid along with Pat Garrett, the man who killed him.
