In early November 2023, I travelled from London to Varanasi for a four day mini-break. My journey included a five hour layover in Larnaca followed by 10/11 hours in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
I then landed in Delhi at about three am, spent two hours filtering through the rammed airport to the metro, then to the central station while it was still dark then spent fucking ages trying to find a cash point I could use as I couldn’t buy any further metro tickets until I did.
I had about five hours in the centre of Delhi in the end. I looked at the Red Fort through a fence, had a delicious thali in a vegan restaurant close to Connaught Place, visited an art gallery for like 30 minutes and had my arm scratched by a child in the street.
I then got back on the metro and headed to the airport for my four nights in Varanasi…

The great cash machine hunt. The airports usually have ATMs or exchange counters which in my experience aren’t too much more expensive. I made my fourth trip to India this year for the first time since 2019 and I found that not only was finding the functioning ATM a problem, so was using the cash without exact change because everyone uses their phones now. I made my first stop in Delhi this time, but had friends guide me around. Hope you share your Varanasi experience and, if you ever go back to India, check out Kolkata.
